I worked as a Home Health care worker in the state of Ohio and I have to tell you it was the worst job. I worked for 4 different agencies, two at the same time on average.

I was paid about $10/hr and was not reimbursed for gas expenses. I was barely making my rent, working 30-40 hour weeks.

A lot of the people you care for want to use you as a maid or a cook and expect you to clean up behind them. In one instance I was sent to the house of a hoarder and expected to clear up years of trash and mess. They send you into homes with people who are mentally unsound and even dangerous without any regard to your personal safety.

This is not a job that works as a career, much less to build a life on. I ended up becoming a nursing assistant because working as a HHA was literally not paying my bills. I left that too, but that’s another story.

Would not recommend anyone become a Home Health care worker. It’s easy to get in, but there’s a reason for that. High turnaround, low pay and questionable morality.

Edit: I did have an independent client at one point in time, and honestly that is the best way to get paid. I believe I got paid $15/hr with the single independent client I had.

But Independent clients are far and few and hard to find, since you cannot take someone on independently from the agency you work for. Don’t bank on it.
